Dusk of Summer Palace

For one hour before closing, the garden belongs to the light.

Kunming Lake, 19:42

The gate closes at eight. By half past seven the tour groups have thinned to a few stragglers, and the long axis of Kunming Lake turns the colour of weak tea. I have walked this path for years, but never with so little time.

The hour before closing

There is a particular quality to the last hour of a public garden. The light is lower, the crowds are quieter, and the place seems to exhale. The vendors pack up their postcards; a guard cycles slowly along the water; someone is still flying a kite above the bridge.

I came in through the East Gate and walked toward the lake, past the bronze lions and the souvenir stalls closing their shutters. I had one camera, one lens, and a decision to make: chase the postcard view, or wait for the light to do something else.

Light on Kunming Lake

The lake is a mirror with a memory. For a few minutes the water holds the sky almost exactly, then a breeze crosses it and the whole picture breaks into brushstrokes. I waited for the second version.

At 19:50 the Seventeen-Arch Bridge went dark against the water. I moved twenty metres left, dropped to one knee, and let the long axis of the lake do the composing. The photograph is almost nothing: a line, a reflection, a warm edge.

“The last light does not fall on the garden; it seems to rise out of it.”

Field note, June 2026

The Long Corridor

The Long Corridor runs for 728 metres along the north shore, a covered walkway of painted beams and small, repeating frames. It is impossible to photograph whole; you photograph the rhythm of it.

What I carried

One body, one lens, one spare battery. A small tripod that I never opened. A cloth for the humidity. Nothing heroic.

The last frame

At 19:58 a guard began to wave people toward the exit. I made one last frame of the lake, put the cap on the lens, and walked out with everyone else. The garden closes; the light does not.
